The most popular party in Rio’s New Year Eve is held in Copacabana beach. This huge celebration is characterized for having free music concerts and performances starting at 8 p.m, featuring everything from traditional Carnival songs to rock and dance. At midnight starts the eccentric fireworks display which lasts almost 30 minutes. The fireworks are based on 8 boats anchored along the horse-shaped beach. The visual effect of watching the sea and the sky painted in exquisite colors is really impressive. Around 2,000,000 people spend New Year’s Eve in the white sand of Copacabana beach, beside the beautiful sea.

A popular tradition in Rio is wearing white clothes for New Year’s Eve. White is considered the lucky color that will bring prosperity for the following year. Other colors also have symbolism and are mainly used in accessories, for example red is good to attract romance, yellow is for prosperity and green for good health. This tradition is mostly seen in local people. so if you travel to Rio on New Year's Eve don't feel about dressing with these colors.

Another Afro-Brazilian popular tradition on New Year’s Eve is offering gifts to Yemanjá, the deity of the seas. The most common presents are white flowers and everyone is supposed to bring them to the beach. Other particular presents are small wooden boats with pictures, food, drinks, cosmetics and candles. A previous ritual is held on the beach and then the offering is given to the sea.

In New Year’s Eve, the ethnic, cultural and social diversity of Brazil is evident. All kinds of people gather to celebrate at the beach and the joy is unlimited.
