The National Fine Arts Museum –in portuguese Museu Nacional de Belas Artes- was opened in 1937, in the old National School of Fine Arts, an impressive French Renaissance (1908) style building designed by Grandjean de Montigny. The museum exposes renowned Brazilian an international art pieces, where is reflected the evolution of Brazilian art.
The main purpose of the National Fine Arts Museum is the conservation and spreading of Brazilian and international arts. The history of this magnificent museum dates back to 19th century, when in 1808 after the French invasion, King John VI of Portugal settle down in Rio de Janeiro, bringing with him a fine collection of Portuguese art, thus beginning what is now the Fine Arts Museum of Rio. A few years later, in 1816, the French artist Joachim Lebreton also contributed to the museum´s collection. Later in the 1900s a new building was established to relocate the School of Fine Arts towards a more centric area. From then on, the collection of the museum has been extended and enriched with masterpieces coming from all over the world.
Nowadays its permanent collection –of over 10.000 works of art- includes paintings, illustrations and sculptures by eminent artists, such as Rodolfo Bernadelli, Jean Baptiste Debret, Eliseau Visconti, Tarsila do Amarl, Louis Eugene Boudin, Candido Portinari and Pablo Picasso.
