The International Museum of Naïf Art is located in a large house from the 19th century, surrounded by centenary mango trees. This interesting museum houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of naïve art in the world, with more than 6,000 art pieces created by Brazilian and international artists. Brazil, together with France, Haiti, Italy, and the ex-Yugoslavia, is one of the "five big countries" in the world that is involved with the naïve art.
The naïve art is mostly practiced by self-taught artists who are not linked to any school or trend; the art pieces have a predominance of live, strong colors and irregular-abstract traces. The power of the naïve artists comes from the fact that they paint without rules and they feel free of any constraint. If you travel to Rio, we recommend visiting this unusual artistic attraction.
The International Museum of Naïf Art in Rio shows both permanent and temporary exhibits, which are always accompanied by multilingual literature containing information about the artist’s background and works. The permanent collection has two of the largest paintings in naïve style, which are displayed in the main room. The original gathering of naïve art pieces around the world was an achievement of the Frenchman Lucien Finkelstein and his Brazilian wife Marie Campos da Paz. The couple traveled for decades to many continents searching for naïve artists in remote places.
Inside the museum the “Artist Store” offers original works of very renowned naïve artists as well as prints, posters, catalogs and many other objects with naïve motifs. Visitors can also join guided tours, which must be scheduled in advance, followed by lectures and cultural tea parties. The museum also offers a variety of art courses in the “atelier” and supports emerging naïve artists.
