The Catete Palace –currently known as the Museum of the Republic- is located in the Flamengo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. It was Brazil’s presidential palace from 1894 to 1960, which means that fundamental decisions -such as the decision to participate in both world wars- were taken in this absolutely incredible mansion. Running from Rua do Catete to Praia do Flamengo, the building presents a stunning neo-classical design with its pink and marble gateways.
The Catete Palace was built between 1858 and 1867 with the intention of housing the Baron of New Friburgo and his family, and was designed by German architect Gustav. In 1889, the property was sold to the Federal Farm, and around a decade later, it was set as the new white house of the presidency. Later, when the capital was moved to Brasilia, the palace was turned into the Museum of the Republic, for which purpose the building had to go through a process of renovation. However, and in order to preserve its historical importance, a few areas kept the original samples. For instance, a long table used during the cabinet meetings is still on its original place, and there is also a multi-media exhibition in remembrance of Getulio Vargas, which includes photographs and videos taken during his mandate.
In addition, nowadays the Catete Palace offers a theatre, an automated reference desk that gives access to thousands of books, items and documents, a bar, a restaurant, a cafe and a bookstore as well as enjoyable gardens. For those reasons the Catete Palace is a must-see either for the art, history or natural lovers visiting Rio de Janeiro.
