Join the secret paradise of Grumari beach in Rio.
The Grumari Beach lies at the end of a coastal drive of Rio de Janeiro -an environmental protected area- and is buffered by mountains that spring up from the ocean. It is the most beautiful and unexplored beach in Rio, reason why it has been scenery for many soap operas and international movies.
At the upper end of Grumari beach, you can find an area called “Abrica”, in which nude sunbathing is allowed. On the other hand, at the lower end of Grumari beach many facilities are available, as well as a short trail that goes to the catinga, a semi arid costal scrub lying between the mountains and the ocean. There is also a fisherman colony, who is in charge of providing restaurants with the catch of the day.
Although the water may be brave at times, making it good for surfing, Grumari Beach isn’t as popular for surfing as it is Prainha, it’s neighbor beach.
As the beach is located in a environmental protected area, the access to buses and cars is forbidden. Therefore, if you are doing tourism in Rio, maybe the best option to get to the Grumari beach is driving from Barra da Tijuca to Recreio dos Bandeirantes or take one of the vans and buses –175 Barra da Tijuca and 179 Recreio- leaving from downtown Rio.
Once you get to Grumari, it’s very usual to negotiate with the fishermen to take you to the nearby beaches on their boats.
