The Barra da Tijuca beach extends from Morro do Joa to the Recreio dos Bandeirantes in Pontal de Sernambetiba. It is the largest beach in Rio de Janeiro, with a length of 18 km of clean and green water which attracts surfers, windsurfers, bodyboarders and fishing enthusiasts from all around the world. The neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca, popular known as “Barra”, is one of the most splendid emerging areas of Rio de Janeiro and home of many brazilian celebrities. Barra is considered an elite area, and it is also compared in some cases to Miami Beach.
The tropical beaches of Barra da Tijuca present bars and seafood restaurants, apart from what brazilians call “barracas”, a kind of tents or stalls which offer fast food and drinks. Another extension of Barra da Tijuca beach is called Praia do Pepe, where some water-sports like Kite surfing are practiced. The name of this stretch was picked to honor a young boy that used to sell food and beer in the beach, who died some years ago now is remembered by his nickname “Pepe”. Praia do Pepe is one of the favorite beaches of Rio among Cariocas, so it's needless to say that you should visit this hidden spot when you travel to Rio.
Barra da Tijuca is a lovely beach, which is calm on weekdays and crowded during summer holidays and weekends. It also hosts many national and international sports championships.
There are many ways to get to Barra da Tijuca beach. One option is to take the bus, which leaves from downtown –175, 179 Alvorada- but due to the extension of the beach, it leaves you on the backstreet. Another economic and effective alternative is to take a van which passes through Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon beach and Rio’s downtown.
