The Sugarloaf Mountain -Pão de Açúcar in portuguese- is one of several monolithic "morros" of granite and quartz located at Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, on a peninsula that protrudes into the Atlantic Ocean and rises 396 meters (1.299 ft) above the harbor.

Although it is said that its name refers to the resemblance that the peak bears to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar, another explanation is given to it, suggesting that the name would derive from "Pau-nh-acuqua" (“high hill”) in the Tupi-Guarani language, used by the Tamois indigenous.

The Sugarloaf Mountain and other two mountains of the area -Morro da Babilônia (Babylon Mountain) and Morro da Urca (Urca's Mountain)- form one of the largest urban climbing areas in the world, with more than 270 routes. These outstanding natural peaks attract climbers from all over the world every year who travel to Rio to enjoy the adventurous routes of the Italianos, Stop Chimney, Lagartão and Ibis, among others.

The cablecar of Rio -called “bondinho” in popular portuguese- was devised in 1908 by the Brazilian engineer Augusto Ferreira Ramos, and since its inauguration in 1912 it has became a tourism icon of Rio de Janeiro. It is capable of transporting 75 passengers, and goes from the base to the Urca Mountain and then to the Pão de Açúcar Mountain, on a fascinating 1400-meter route.

The access to the cablecar is through Avenida Pasteur 520 at Urca, and the ride is available from Sundays to Thursdays from 8 am to 10 pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 am to 8.30 pm.
