The São Francisco das Penitências Church, one of the most valuable heritages of baroque art in Brazil, was built between 1657 and 1772 and managed by the government since 1938.
The most remarkable aspects of the church's art-style are its blue Portuguese tiles, its carved altar made of jacaranda wood, as well as a roof panel designed by the artist José Oliveira Rosa that portrays St Francis receiving the stigmata. Also works of the Portuguese artist Francisco Xavier de Brito are exhibited at the church.
Moreover, the church has the Santo Antônio Statue, which attracts many cariocas looking for their soul-mates. If you travel to Rio, don't miss this unique cultural and spiritual attraction.
The access to the church is through elevator or stairs from Largo da Carioca, close to the Santo Antônio Cloister. It opens to visitors –offering guided tours- from Tuesday to Friday, from 9 am to midday, and from 1pm to 4pm.
