The São Bento Cloister was built between 1617 and 1669 and restored a century later -in a process that is still operating- for extending and updating its facilities.
Declared a World Heritge Monument by UNESCO, the São Bento Cloister has an impressive contrast between the austere styles of its front wall and the ostentatious inside walls with gold-plated engravings. Its painting works such as the aisle ceiling, the conception of chapels, the works of art and the Gregorian choral chanting, captivate whoever visits it. This Cloister is one of the most popular in Brazil and certainly a top cultural attraction for those who travel to Rio.
The São Bento Cloister is located on Rua D. Geraldo 68, and the entry for pedestrians is through elevator on 40 Downtown. It opens daily: on work days from 8 am to 11 am and from 2 pm to 6 pm, and on weekends from 11 am.
