The Rodrigo de Freitas Lake, also known as "Lagoa", is located in the Lagoa district (South zone of Rio de Janeiro), one of the fanciest neighborhoods in the city. In addition to be surrounded by other fancy neighborhoods, such as Ipanema, Leblon, Gávea and Jardim Botânico, is embraced by the arms of the majestic Christ Redeemer statue, making the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake an incredible place to visit in Rio.
The history of the Lagoa dates back to the XVI century, time by which it was surrounded by sugarcane crops named Engenho d'El Rei. Later, in the XVII century, the area was bought by the man to whom the name of the lake is owed: Rodrigo de Freitas. However, it was not until the arrival of streetcars in the late XIX Century that the area started to develop, finally turning into an amazing park, not only to the mind of visitants but also in the opinion of Historical Patrimony, being declared a National Landmark. Today is a must seeing attraction for those doing tourism in Rio.
Apart from the beauty of the Lagoon's landscape, visitors can enjoy parks, sports courts, skating rings, an heliport, trails for walks and jogging, a bicycle track, playgrounds for children, cycling boats and a gourmet area paved with stalls offering typical dishes from many countries. But despite the overwhelming variety of foods, brazilian fast and cheap foods such as the delicious sweet corns with butter shouldn’t be dismissed. At night, performances of local artists –mainly groups of samba or bossa nova singers- are exposed at the Lagoon.
