Quinta da Boa Vista - Rio de Janeiro

The Quinta da Boa Vista is part of the Solar da Boa Vista, the royal residence of brazilian emperors between 1822 and 1889. It is located in the São Cristóvão neighborhood, in the North zone of Rio de Janeiro, and extends over an area of 155 thousand m2. The Quinta da Boa Vista is a symbolic public park and important historical landmark of Rio de Janeiro.

The name of the park was appointed by the owner of the park Elias Antonio Lopes in the early 19th century. He built a house on top of a hill from where it was appreciable a breathtaking view of the Guanabara Bay, inspiring the actual name of the park as “Boa Vista” or “Nice View”. Later in 1808, the owner donated his farm to the Prince Regent John VI, reason why, the house had to be renovated in order to adapt its facilities to the Portuguese Royal Family. Therefore, large gardens were installed during 1869, following a project designed by the french landscaper artist Auguste Glaziou.

Today, these imperial gardens host the National Museum and the Zoological Garden of the city, apart from playgrounds, sports courts and restaurants. For those who travel to Rio, we recommend visiting this natural wonder.

The National Museum was founded in 1818 by King John VI of Portugal, and transferred to the imperial palace of the Quinta Boa Vista in 1892. The collections exhibited in this important museum –most of them acquired through donations- include Astronomy, Paleontology, Natural History and Ethnology samples. There are also a couple of rooms of the ancient palace, preserved with their original decoration.

The Quinta da Boa Vista Park also hosts an extraordinary Zoo, which is one of the biggest attractions of the park. Inaugurated in 1945, the Zoological Garden is home of more than 2000 animals species, including monkeys and birds.

Quinta da Boa Vista, is daily open from 7 am to 6 pm, and offers guided tours and free gardening lessons on weekends.
