The Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church is located in the financial district of Praça Pio X,. This church of Rio was built between 1775 and 1894 with the initiative of a ship’s captain who shipwrecked, and who had promised -during his unpredictable crossing- to build a church to Nossa Senhora da Candelária in the case of a fortunate outcome.
By those times, the temple was the most majestic construction of the imperial Brazil, and it still dazzles given its historical and architectural value. Its interior shows baroque and renaissance styles and its dome was fabricated entirely from portuguese limestone.
The church of Candelaria is open daily, from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm on working days, from 9 am to noon on Saturdays, and from 9 am to 1 pm on Sundays, day in which mass is said (at 9.00, 10.00 and 11.00).
