A jewel in its genre, that is the widespread concept of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, “Jardim Botânico” in portuguese, and it isn’t misleading. Founded in 1808 by John VI of Portugal and opened to the public in 1822, this ecological treasure was originally created with the intention of growing spices coming from the West Indies, such as nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. The Botanical Garden has an area of 140 hectares and lies under the right arm of Christ the Redeemer. It houses more than 6.000 species of tropical plants and trees –including palm trees from the time of the garden’s foundation- and an endless variety of animal species, such as the Channel-Billed Toucan and the Dusky-legged Guan. For this reason the Botanical Garden is under government trust, and it was considered a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1992. Today is a must seeing attraction in your trip to Rio.
In addition to its natural wonders, the complex has a research institute, as well as sculptures, fountains, a Japanese Garden, greenhouses, orchid rooms and a lagoon with Victoria lilies. These features will fascinate all the members of the family, making the Botanical Garden a must for Rio de Janeiro visitors.
The access is available for both pedestrians and vehicles, on Rua Jardim Botânico 920 and 1008 respectively. The Botanical Garden of Rio opens every day from 8 am to 5 pm except on 25th December and 1st January.
